CARIMET is made up of representatives of the National Metrology Institutes (NMIs) of all the Countries of the Caribbean area with the exception of Cuba and Puerto Rico. It was originally conceived as a sub-regional body of SIM (Sistema Interamericano de Metrologia) which is the Regional Metrology Organization of the Americas. Its core members are the English speaking countries that make up CARICOM. The mainland countries of Guyana and Surinam are included in the membership of CARIMET. While Belize is geographically associated with another sub-regional group of SIM (CAMET), it is a general practice within SIM to group Belize with CARIMET.
At the Twelfth CROSQ Council Meeting held in Barbados 9 - 10 April 2008, CARIMET sought a more formal association with CROSQ. It has been agreed that CARIMET will submit its Terms of Reference, Work plan and Budget to Council as a working committee of CROSQ.
With this development CARIMET hopes to be able to link the National Goals of individual member countries with those of the CARICOM group within the framework of the regional and international metrology system. Membership of SIM is the link to international metrology.
Metrology is an important tool of development. CARIMET hopes to bring the benefits of metrology practice into the mainstream of Caribbean Industry and society.
