Belize Bureau of Standards

The Belize Bureau of Standards (BBS) is a government department established by the Standards Act of 1992 and continues to operate under the terms of the Standards Act Revised Edition of 2000. It operates under the aegis of the Ministry of Economic Development, Commerce, Industry and Consumer Protection and is the national organization for the preparation, promotion and implementation of standards related to goods, services and processes.


The main roles of the BBS are to:

  • promote standardization in relation to commodities, processes and practices in industry and commerce;
  • develop, adapt and adopt standards covering technical criteria in relation to domestically produced, imported and exported goods;
  • provide and make arrangements for the examination and testing of products for compliance to national and regional requirements, and issue certificates; and
  • assume the role of national information point for regional and international trade sensitive matters.

The vision of BBS is "to become a financially sustainable Bureau of Standards providing efficient professional and online service delivery to local and international clients" while its mission is "to increase trade by promoting the use of quality managements systems and international standards thereby improving and enhancing the economy and the quality of life for our people."


BBS holds membership in the CARICOM Regional Organisation for Standards and Quality (CROSQ).
